On May 9, 2024 the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration appointed the 14th May 2024 as the date which the Public Benefits Organizations Act, 2013 would come into operation

In July 2024, the PBO Regulatory Authority issued a press release accusing the petitioners of funding recent youth protests against the government and operating illegally.

On August 2, 2024 five Kenyan civil society organizations (CSOs) filed a case against the Public Benefits Organizations Regulatory Authority (PBO Regulatory Authority), its chairman and acting CEO.

In the petition, the petitioners claim that the respondents violated the Kenyan Constitution and the Public Benefits Organizations Act (PBO Act) through their actions related to a press release issued in July 2024.
